On Saturday, November 11, 2017; the Oelwein Police Department and Fareway Stores teamed up to "Arrest Hunger". This year's project was organized by Officer Matthew Schmelzer. The annual event was again successful with hundreds of food items and cash donations received. All of the food and money donated go to the Oelwein Kitchen Cupboard to be dispersed to those in need. This project continues the department "Project One" where one action, one effort, one person, one team and/or one community can make a difference!
On October 24, 2017, the Oelwein Police Department received a national and global award for their efforts in community policing – community engagement. Since 1998, the award, sponsored by Cisco Systems and presented by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, has recognized outstanding community policing initiatives undertaken by law enforcement agencies. The award identifies and rewards best practices in community policing by recognizing police organizations that use the power of collaboration and partnerships to make local, national, and global communities safer from crime and terrorism.
The Oelwein Police Department was selected as the 2017 winner for agencies serving a population fewer than 20,000. The Oelwein Police Department's "Project One" was recognized as the best practice in law enforcement community policing. This new initiative displays that one action, effort, gesture, person, team, or community truly makes a difference. It is a multi-faceted approach that utilizes the various talents and passions of the officers while working with various community groups and partners to accomplish tasks.
"We are honored to receive such a prestigious award. Our staff deserves all of the credit for their hard work and their compassionate service to our community" stated Chief Jeremy Logan. "Our officers and our dispatchers proudly serve our community in the way that most communities expect from their public safety departments but they also do so much more above and beyond that and it is great to see the department recognized for that."
"The "Project One" efforts have allowed for officers to partner with other groups to complete many projects with some of those being:
- work with a local group that helps individuals with special needs to have a bowling outing where the officers are present and interacting with the participants
- partnering with other emergency services and the local campground to host "Camp with a Cop" where attendees are young boys that are guided on leadership and character
- partnering with a local nursery to plant trees in a park
- partnering with St. Jude's Children's Hospital to host a motorcycle poker run to benefit their patients
- food drives
- blood drives
- visiting nursing homes to serve meals to the residents
- utilizing officer donated funds to provide food gift cards to those in need during the holidays
- working with wrestling club to clean community monument signs
- working with basketball club to mulch trees and signs at the Veterans Sports Complex
- work with Chamber of Commerce to host a fundraiser for the Iowa Veterans Home

The department was recognized at the International Association of Chiefs of Police awards banquet which was held in Philadelphia, PA.

On November 11, 2017 at 1:00 a.m., Oelwein Officers were called to a disturbance in the 100 block of South Frederick. Officers arrested Jeffrey Allen Abrahamson, age 41 of Waterloo on a charge of Public Intoxication, a Simple Misdemeanor.
Oelwein Officers performed a traffic stop int he 100 block of South Frederick on November 11, 2017 at 10:55 p.m. Officers cited and released Luis German Ortega, age 22 of Waterloo for Driving While License Suspended.
At 5:24 p.m., on November 5, 2017 Oelwein Police arrested Andrew Lee Heath, 30, of Oelwein. Heath was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault-Simple Misdemeanor. This arrest followed an incident in the 200 block 1st av NW.
On November 5, 2017 at 8:30 p.m., Oelwein Officers performed a traffic stop in the 500 block of West Charles Avenue in Oelwein. Officers cited and released James Russel Meeker, age 46 of Independence, on a charge of Driving While License Suspended.
Oelwein Police are investigating a Criminal Mischief Complaint. Oelwein Police received a report of Criminal Mischief at 5:29 a.m., on November 5, 2017 from the 10 block E Charles. This incident remains under investigation

At 12:44 a.m., on November 5, 2017 Oelwein Police arrested Skuyler Jamel Ellington, 24, of Oelwein. Ellington was arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief 4th Degree- Aggravated Misdemeanor, Assault- Serious Misdemeanor, and Public Intoxication- Simple Misdemeanor. This arrest followed and an incident in the 100 block of South Frederick.
On October 30, 2017 at 9:30 p.m., Oelwein Officers performed a traffic stop in the 2000 block of South Frederick Avenue in Oelwein. Officers cited and released Joseph Neville Randall, age 46 of Strawberry Point, on a charge of Driving While License Suspended.
Oelwein Police are investigating a Theft Complaint. Oelwein Police received a report of Theft Complaint, at 9:03 p.m., on October 27, 2017 from the 100 block South Frederick This incident remains under investigation
On October 25, 2017 at 10:40 a.m., Oelwein Officers and the Oelwein Fire Department were called to a residence in the 10 block of 5th Avenue NE for a reported house fire. After an investigation as to the origins of the fire, Oelwein Police arrested Allyssa Michele Garrison, age 23, of Oelwein on a charge of 2nd Degree Arson, a Class "C" Felony.
Oelwein Officers were called to a business in the 100 block of South Frederick, on October 25, 2017 at 7:10 p.m. for a reported shoplifter. Officers arrested Kimberly Marie Schoultz, age 48 of Oelwein on a charge of Theft 5th Degree, a Simple Misdemeanor.
Oelwein Police are investigating a Criminal Mischief Complaint. Oelwein Police received a report of Criminal Mischief, at 8:18 a.m., on October 21, 2017 from the 300 block 8th av se. This incident remains under investigation.
At 4:36 p.m., on October 21, 2017 Oelwein Police arrested Joshua James Levendusky, 35, of Oelwein. Levendusky was arrested on Multiple Fayette County Warrants for Probation Violation and Failure to Appear. This arrest followed officer’s interaction with the subject in the 300 block 6th st ne.
At 6:32 p.m., on October 21, 2017 Oelwein Police arrested Mykala Lynn Meike, 23, of Oelwein Meike was arrested on Two Fayette County for the Original Charges of Child Endangerment and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. This arrest followed an officer’s interaction with the Subject in the 500 block of Rock Island Road.
On September 28, 2017 at 4:08 p.m., Oelwein Police served an abatement to the resident of a property in the 200 block of 4th Avenue SEE. On October 18, 2017 Ronald Craig Dean, age 40, was served a civil citation for Failure to Abate Property as Ordered.
Oelwein Police are investigating a Theft Complaint. Oelwein Police received a report of Theft, at 3:27 p.m., on October 18, 2017 from the 10 block Shady Lane. This incident remains under investigation.
On October 19, 2017 at 12:01am Oelwein Police arrested Nick David Walker 40, of Oelwein. Walker was charged with Trespassing-Simple Misdemeanor and Theft 5th Degree-Simple Misdemeanor. This arrest followed an incident in the 10 block 1st av se on October 16, 2017
